Every girl child has an Ichha, a desire, to go to school, sit in a classroom, read books, play with her friends and enjoy a happy childhood. But today there are many, many Ichhas that are yet to become a reality.

You see them at railway platforms or traffic signals, working as household help or even in commercial establishments in your neighbourhood.

This inspired us to help change the situation. So we asked friends like you to join our campaign - Click Rights for the Girl Child and send us photographs representing a girl child's desire to go to school and live a happy life.

In our 40-day campaign, you shared more than 1392 faces of Ichha, signed the pledge to demand every girl's right from authorities and participated in on-ground activities held across the country to support education for the girl child...

Here is a glimpse of how your support helped us talk to millions of people about every girl child's right to a childhood.

You can continue sharing photographs with us, and give your constant support towards every girl child in India.

At 7, Shravani had to leave school to take care of her cousins. For her large family with modest means, a girl's education was not priority, marriage was. Her elder sisters were forced to marry young and drop out of school.

But Shravani held on to her desire to study. With the help of CRY-supported project Shramika Vikasa Kendram in Andhra Pradesh, she gained the confidence to ask for her rights and complete her education instead of getting married. Today as the Vice President of the Bal Sangham (a Children's group), Shravani is fighting to end child marriage. Her sister, Jyothi, too is studying after marriage and is an inspiration to her.

Shravani and several other girls in the community have returned to school by tackling the social and economic issues that stopped their education. This was possible only because they believed in their dreams and fought for their right to education

Attitude chanegs everything
Girls don't need education. Getting them married as children is OK. It’s fine to have a little girl as a house help. For too long such attitudes have deprived girls of their right to education. But it’s time for change. We believe that it’s important to recognize and empower a girl’s dreams and we should increase awareness about a girl’s rights. If you share this belief, sign the pledge!
Findings of CRY’s Research
  • 1 out of every 6 girls does not live to see her 15th birthday.
  • 56 per cent of the schools in India still have no separate toilets for girls (forcing them to drop-out of school)
  • 1 million girls in India ‘disappear’ every year
  • In India, the sex ratio in the 0-6 age only 914 girls for 1000 boys (in 2011)
  • Roughly 50% of all working children are girls
  • 53% of girls in the age group of 5 to 9 years are illiterate.
