Dear Friend,

Children are individuals…and as adults, we tend to often overlook this fact. At CRY we believe that every child has equal rights and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child spells out these very rights that children everywhere have: the right to survival; to develop to the fullest; to protection from harmful influences and exploitation; and to participate fully in family, cultural and social life. 192 countries, including India (in 1992), have ratified this treaty.

The Right to Survival assumes particular importance in the Indian context, where due to gender discrimination a girl child has to struggle to simply exist. If such pernicious customs as female foeticide and infanticide don’t snuff her out, denial of access to basic healthcare does. The result? A grossly skewed male:female sex ratio. Even where girls survive infancy, they are neglected and most often ill-health ensures they never reach adulthood.

CRY Connect highlights how this basic right to survival ensures that every child is allowed to be born, and once born is allowed to live to reach adulthood with access to quality healthcare, a name and nationality. While CRY works for all underprivileged children, we particularly encourage and partner NGOs that work with girl children, for whom your continued support literally makes the difference between life and death.

In faith and goodwill.

P.S. We would like to share with you CRY’s rehabilitation efforts in the torrential rains and floods that hit Maharashtra, India on July 26. As always, our emphasis is on children who are the most vulnerable in situations like this and whose rights tend to be grossly violated. Read more
