Who we are

CRY - Child Rights and You is an Indian non-government organisation that catalyses change in the lives of underprivileged children in India by restoring their rights.

At a Glance

At CRY, we do not believe in charity. We do not run schools, orphanages or dispensaries. Instead, we partner NGOs working with children, their parents, and community. And we work with our partner NGOs to bring about long term and sustainable change to the lives of children, by empowering communities to address the root causes of illiteracy, poverty, discrimination and exploitation.

The Global Operations division, based in Delhi was started in 1994 with the objective of reaching out to the Indian diaspora across the globe, to partner in CRY's efforts for marginalised children. We create awareness and garner support from the diaspora in all countries except the UK and the US. CRY partners with CRY America in USA and CRY UK in the UK. These two registered entities operate independently. To know more, contact us.

CRY Vision and Mission

Vision: A happy, healthy and creative child whose rights are protected and honoured in a society that is built on respect for dignity, justice and equity for all.

Mission: To enable people to take responsibility for the situation of the deprived Indian child and so motivate them to seek resolution through individual and collective action thereby enabling children to realise their full potential. And people to discover their potential for action and change. To enable peoples' collectives and movements encompassing diverse segments, to pledge their particulae strengths, working in partnership to secure, protect and honour the rights of India's children.

Origin and Founder

Rippan Kapur, the airline purser who founded CRY, was an ordinary person driven by an extraordinary dream - the dream that no Indian child would be deprived of rights as basic as survival, participation, protection and development.

Like all of us, Rippan got upset to see the disparities that exist between privileged and marginalised children. He hated to see children begging and working as servants and he did something about it. In his case, the action started young. Today the movement has grown beyond India to include people like you globally.

People at CRY

CRY is governed by a leadership structure made up of two bodies, a Board of Trustees, and the Management Committee headed by the CEO. In principle, members of the Board serve in their individual capacity, and not as representatives of any organisation or institution, to ensure complete independence in policy making. The key role of the management committee is to provide direction and leadership to the organisation, evolve and implement strategy, create relevant organisational policy and efficiently run operations.

Teams in CRY

We partner with individuals and small grassroots organisations across India, whom we support financially / non-financially as well as with you, people from all walks of life across the world, who believe in the rights of children. Within CRY too, each function works in unison towards ensuring our vision - equal rights for all children.

The key CRY functions of Development Support (grant making) and Resource Mobilisation (fundraising) along with the other functions - Communications, Human Resources, Youth and Volunteer action, Finance, Planning and Information Technology, Policy and Research, Documentation and CRY World - all play a critical role in our organisation building efforts.

How Are We Different

We are independent with an inclusive approach; believe in the philosophy of partnership and are scrupulous with our standards of accountability and transparency. We have over 30 years of experience working with marginalised children and communities at the grassroots level through 200 grassroots level initiatives in 18 states in 2009-10 alone. CRY also works with state bodies for influencing policy and implementation for sustainable change. CRY was awarded NGO of the year in 2007 by UK Based Resource Alliance and India's Nand & Jeet Khemka Foundation for effective and transparent use of funds.
