Ahmednagar District in Maharashtra is inhabited by marginalised communities like Pardhi and Bhil. The Pardhi community is one of the 150 de-notified tribes that were branded criminal under the British law. Even though Independent India repealed the Criminal Tribe Act in 1949, officially removing the criminal label, they still face discrimination which is one of the reasons that very few of them have access to education and other benefits of State services. CRY-supported project Vanchit Vikas Sangsta stepped in to make a difference. View Photoessay

The Vikramshila Education Resource Society is an educational resource centre founded in 1989 in Kolkata by a group of teachers committed towards improving children's education, especially in neglected rural and urban areas. Vikramshila develops and provides innovative material and services facilitating better teaching enabling children to actively participate in their learning process. CRY has been supporting Vikramshila for almost a decade.
Vikramshila has provided many CRY-supported projects with invaluable training and guidance. The West Bengal government has adopted the educational tools developed by Vikramshila in Government run schools and the District Primary Education Programme, proving its success. Today Vikramshila provides educational support not only to CRY partners in Eastern India but also to the North Indian states and is also a key partner in evolving CRY's education strategy.
