Thampu - National Trust for Tribal People in Kerala

  • Growth Tracking done of 132 identified malnourished children out of which 31 children are admitted and getting treatment at Nutrition and Rehabilitation Centers
  • On raising the demand for improving infrastructure in the hostels, the government has sanctioned and inaugurated 4 new hostels for Attappadi Block
  • In oorukoottam 7 resolutions were passed for establishing primary schools and forwarded to Education Minister

Thampu, an initiative by Rajendra Prasad has been working with tribal communities in Attappady since 1985 and it was registered as a society in the year 2002.

The aim of the organization is to work towards equity and justice for the tribal communities in Attapady through redeeming and strengthening their tribal identity and protecting rights of the children. Thampu’s interventions have focus on mobilizing the tribal community, carrying out a comprehensive survey, making efforts towards state level advocacy for tribal rights and involving media in the struggle. Through out the year, Thampu has strengthened its work and intervened strongly to raise the issue of malnutrition and child deaths. It has brought the child rights discourse inside the State and State government especially ‘Ministry of Social Justice’ has given a formal invitation to give recommendations to the Draft Nutrition Policy of Kerala State. Thampu has been identified as one of the key child rights players in the State.
