| Major Issues aaddressed |
Displacement of people because of acquisition of land by Central Coalfields Limited (CCL) without adequate compensation in terms of money or land to the displaced. Degradation of soil, severe drought proneness, inadequate sources of irrigation facilities and the largely unequal profit sharing from agriculture has rendered agriculture unprofitable. Closure of local mica and coal mines has further reduced livelihood options. People consequently migrate out of ther eference area. Child labor is also rampant. Deforestation is large scale. Malnourishment of children is common. |
| Objectives |
Awareness and organization of people on the issues of women, youth, Child labour and working children, child marriages and dowry deaths. To sensitize media on child rights issues. To rejuvenate and establish traditional seeds, agriculture, organic fertilizer, and other traditional arts and culture. Strengthening Gram Sabhas. Strengthening interface with local political representatives. To increase awareness and ensuring rights towards the natural resources like Jal, Jungle and Jameen. |
| Description of initiative in brief |
Jago has been directly intervening in Giridih district for ensuring child rights and people's rights with the aim of developing a society based on equity, justice and fraternity. In the adjacent district, Koderma, it supports Kalyan Foundation, an organization working towards restoration of children's rights in the mica mines and the CCL area. They have been focussing on mobilization of local comunities through awareness generation and campaigning with a view to involve them in pressure building on local government for availing due entitlements. Traditional cultural activities like Gayan and Jhumar have also been used to mobilize the community. Jago is an active of CREJ - the Jharkhand state alliance and other regional alliances like Jharkhand Hulgulan Manch. CRY partners this NGO through direct action which includes financial and non-financial support such as management of funds, project-planning, material requirements, perspective-building programmes on child rights, baseline data establishment, organisational development, advocacy campaigns, linking them to larger alliances and networks, training for skill building, information support, and developing promotional materials among others |
