The shame and silence around periods in India adversely impact women and girls, killing the potential to fulfil their dreams. Unfortunately, 24% of girls miss one or more school days due to their periods (Source: BMJ Article). Reasons for this include physical discomfort, lack of water/hygiene facilities in school toilets, fear of staining, and social norms. These girls are not able to attend their classes regularly and eventually drop out of school discontinuing their education. Girls are often pushed into marriage at an early age once they stop going to school, leading to permanent loss of potential.
CRY believes that girls should not be held back due to discrimination, exclusion and stigma that still exists around menstruation in our society.
Here’s how CRY is taking a step ahead and helping to break this silence around periods –
Let’s create a better support system for our girls to reduce the shame around periods. Your generous contribution will help them reach their truest potential, and create a positive emotional impact on their lives.
