Adarsh Seva Sansthan is working in the urban slums and has established itself through its quality of work and intervention that has impacted lives of slum-dwelling children. The project has spread its operations in 46 slums (23 in Jamshedpur, 8 Dhanbad, 6 Ranchi, 6 Bokaro) in Jharkhand. The issues related to education in the slums are a bit different from the general issues in the rural areas. The strength of the intervention is its ability to empower the community to take up both the children’s as well as their own issues. It has been successful in tackling many issues which include retention of children in schools (now at 70%), regularizing SNP and immunization in ICDS centres, growth monitoring of malnourished children, etc. It has also built good strategic relations with both, the government departments as well as non-governmental bodies.
