Synopsis of the play: PUKAAR - A Call for Action depicts the harsh realities that face our children. Six narratives in the play throw light upon the deprivation and discrimination that children and adults face in rural and urban India. The characters speak of the structures and systems in society that help perpetuate discrimination. They challenge myths and debate on social perceptions and demand for them to be addressed. Justice and equality are the two screening parameters forming the basis of the discourse. The play sees children as empowered beings whose participation is vital for social change. In dealing with children's issues, PUKAAR establishes the link between child rights and human rights. Thus by not seeing the child as isolated from the community around him/her, the play reaches out to advocate for affected people and communities as well. PUKAAR is essentially a call to you to join the citizen's network - Mumbaiites for Child Rights. PUKAAR is a call for public action for child rights! CRY believes that the urban privileged public has immense power to influence and impact the lives of affected children for the better by interfacing with and challenging the government. Only when enough of us - as voters, parents, teachers, investors, neighbours, businesspersons, lawyers, consumers, activists, students, judges, administrators, journalists and politicians alike - overcome our apathy, cynicism and inertia and reconfigure our priorities to put children first, and demand as a collective, only then can we change the situation of underprivileged children and communities in a sustainable manner. CRY believes each one of us has a voice and can take up this significant role. We invite you to partner us - to amplify the voice of children, to demand a just society for them. Thereby reaching out to many more individuals, organisations and the State itself.
