86 poems and a concern A Poem for CRY: Eminent Indians for child rights New Delhi, November 10, 2006: A Poem for CRY, a collection of 86 favourite poems of well known Indians, was released by Delhi's Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit on 10th November 2006, in Delhi .
All 91 contributors are Indians and luminaries. But CRY - Child Rights & You and Penguin Books India have added another commonality by providing a unique poetic platform to make them emissaries for child rights. The single message: Child rights is not just the purview of development sector or the government. It is a responsibility for each one of us -- no matter who we are or what we do. It strongly articulates CRY's conviction that change is possible when diverse groups choose to merge for a common objective. Releasing "A Poem For CRY", Delhi's Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said, "Money is important but more importantly it is the manner in which funds are managed. It is here that organisations like CRY can play an important role. They need to ensure that policies are implemented." The book includes favourite poems from a diverse sections of Indians across the globe - Nobel Laureate Amartya Sen and India's cricket captain Rahul Dravid. Sitarist Pandit Ravi Shankar and IT baron Azim Premji. Also President Dr A P J Abdul Kalam, the Dalai Lama, Aamir Khan, A B Vajpayee, Sonia Gandhi, Vikram Seth, Shahrukh Khan, Rahul Dravid, Jagjit Singh, Amitabh Bachchan, Harsh Goenka , Kiran Bedi and Shabana Azmi. Nandan Maluste, CRY Trustee, articulates the spirit behind the initiative saying, "The anthology is symbolic of the diversity of people, thought and culture that will need to work together if we are to achieve rights for all India's children. It also encapsulates the belief on which Rippan Kapur founded CRY - that each of us is a resource for children and that if enough of us come together, even the daunting task of reversing centuries of exclusion and exploitation can be accomplished. A Poem for CRY encapsulates and articulates this very belief" In the foreward, Prof Amartya Sen believes that it is "a privilege for me to be associated with this wonderful joint effort" and adds "The poems are of interest not only for the merits of the poems themselves, but also for telling us something about the commitments and priorities of the selectors that are reflected in their choices. We live not only by our own thoughts formulated in isolation, but also by the ideas and phrases of others that resonate and move us." Shri Soli Sorabjee, Attorney General of India, present at the launch expressed that, "The difference between developed countries and India is not the infrastructure like bridges but the state of the children." The team who put this initiative together, Avanti Maluste and Sudeep Doshi, saw A Poem for CRY as a creative and lasting medium to take the issue of child rights to wider social groups. They worked on this project for over two years to compile the poems. This meant following up personalities across continents and oceans. Speaking on the joint venture, Thomas Abraham, CEO and President, Penguin Books India says, "Penguin has had a wonderful relationship with CRY earlier too with our collaboration on Ladybird India. We are delighted to have published A Poem for CRY both for the value of the work (a brilliant idea that has resulted in a brilliant collection with immense value) and for the fact that royalties go for a very worthwhile cause. We'd also like to thank all the eminent people who have contributed selflessly by participating in the project." Another such initiative where youth of all ages and again from diverse backgrounds are using street theatre as a medium for messaging on child rights is CRY's Bal Natya Utsav. This event which will take place in Dilli Haat from November 11-14, 2006, has school and college students, professional theatre groups as well as children from CRY's partner initiatives join hands and use theatre as a means to articulate child rights. In the same venue, on November 11 & 12, 2006 a theatre workshop for donor's children, involves yet another section of society in the movement to actualize child rights. About CRY (Child Rights and You) CRY - Child Rights and You earlier known as Child Relief and You is India's leading advocate for child rights. Over 27 years CRY has partnered with NGOs, communities, government, the media and is dedicated to mobilising all sections of society to eliminate the root causes of deprivation, exclusion, exploitation and abuse, to ensure justice for children.
