Nabadisha
This orgnaisation is an example of a unique partnership between the Calcutta Police, an NGO partner and CRY. Nabadisha, started in January 1999 by the Calcutta Police in an attempt to extend a helping hand to the city's street children Its only agenda at the time was healthcare, but a few months later it collaborated with CRY and its NGO partner resulting in non-formal education being added to the programme. Today, there are over 15 centres conducting non-formal education programmes in various police stations of the city that take in children from the 5-14 age group. The older children are sent to vocational training centres run by other organisations. So far, out of 700 children enrolled, 600 have been enrolled into mainstream government-assisted schools.
Here's an example of how Nabadisha transformed Bikash's life forever!
Bikash Sengupta's poverty ridden parents pulled him out of school in his hometown in Midnapore, Bengal, and brought him to Kolkata to seek employment. "Lucky" Bikash got a job in a tea factory where he got paid Rs.3/- for every tea packet he packed. If not for Nabadisha he would have still been there.
Started in 1999, Nabadisha, a CRY-supported project, enables slum and street children like Bikash to get an education. Teamed with the Kolkata Police, and implemented by a CRY partner, Vikramshila Education Resource Society, Nabadisha initiates underprivileged children into a new world of alphabets, numbers, song, dance and most of all, confidence.
Bikash joined Nabadisha, and being a quick learner, a dedicated and diligent student, was soon topping his class and is now a full-time student. He attends the Nabadisha centre every morning and then goes to the Corporation school where he has created a record , getting 90% in his annual exam(the highest score attained by any of the school's students in the past 3 years). He excels in art, craft, recitation, acting and sports, is Class Monitor and has even teaches junior classes when the teacher is absent, all thanks to Nabadisha.
