Child Rights and You (CRY) is a 44-year-old non-profit organization that works to create happier childhoods for children in India. We focus on education, health, nutrition, and the protection of children through our 102 projects spread across 19 states. Our core belief is that every child deserves a fair chance at education, regardless of gender, caste, or economic background. Therefore, we bring about lasting change for India’s children by educating parents, teachers, communities, and children themselves, leading to positive changes in behavior and practices at the grassroots level.
This appeal is for CRY project located in Tigri – one of the largest slums in Delhi and is situated in the southern part of the city. It is a legalized rehabilitation colony housing marginalized populations from different states. and occupations such as shoemaking and construction labor. Living conditions are poor, with cramped rooms, narrow lanes, poor sanitation and a lack of security.
The community at Tigri values work over education, as they struggle due to the high cost of living. The closure of schools during the pandemic pushed many children from this area to drop out of school and take up jobs to support their families. With no school, children engaged in substance abuse and petty crimes due to idle time. The lockdown also resulted in increased incidents of domestic violence and worsened mental health of children.
CRY aims to help these children reconnect to education by tracking, assessing, and providing support through initiatives like –
